Khadija

59. A mountain village above Ramallah. Olive oil soap.

Her story

“Good soap is three things. Oil, water, and patience.”

Khadija farms on a mountainside where the wind never fully stops. Her family presses its own olives every autumn, and the oil that is too green or too strong for the table goes to the soap.

She cooks it slowly with spring water in a copper pot that belonged to her mother-in-law, stirring for hours until it thickens, then pours it out to set, cuts it into cubes and stamps each one by hand.

The cubes are stacked in open towers and left to cure through the winter. She says a bar is not ready until it has forgotten the pot.

Family

Married to Yusuf, who tends the terraces and the press. Three children, two of them in the city.

Her village

Central highlands

High, cold winters and dry summers. Fig and almond trees, old olive terraces, long views west to the sea.
